Would you please contact me? Am writing an article about the works of Artisan House and wish to talk to any family members associated with the early days of the firm, such as Mr Freiler (I understand Mr Fels is dead). Peter Fels's email no longer works.

I have worked for Artisan House for 33 years starting when I was 17. I've worked for the orginal owners and founders of Artisan House and every owner since.
As far as the c jere name goes the two orginal owners were very secretive about who he was or his existance. I will say that the first names of the founders were Curtis and Jerry.
If anyone has questions about Artisan House history or the c jere name I'll do my best to answer.

Hello all! I have a dear friend who is in a dilemma. His parents have passed on and he has acquired a 1970's C. Jeres scultpure that he loves. However, his sister on the East Coast loves it too and unfortunately it is causing problems. Sad, but true. He's trying to find another copy of the sculpture or, maybe, get a copy made to make everyone happy...

Does anyone have any ideas? I've seen the sculpture, it's quite nice. It's of a barn, with a fence and windmill as well. His parents bought it in the 70's at Lawrence Gallery on the Oregon Coast. I've tried calling the Artisan House but (as another person here) have yet to get a return phone call.

Please email me directly at moondancerdesigns@hotmail.com

Thanks so much!

c. jere' is the trademark used on metal sculpture...artisan house has artists, a master craftsman, and apprentices to make these metal scuptures...the original sculptor, c. jere' is dec'd, I believe.. his name was sold and is used as the trademark for metal works being made. secretcove. com sells c. jere' affordable pieces. perhaps they can help you find out the value of their pieces... master sculptors vary...there is no longer a living person, sculptor, c. jere.. that's all I know.. sheindie;-)

Hi: I have a bronze sculpture of a young boy running with a butterfly net, signed c. jere 1968, purchased in San Francisco in '69. A friend said she saw a similar sculpture on Antiques Roadshow, valued over $300.
Describe yours.

Hello I have a great big sculpture that you can hang vertical/horizontal. It's like a lot of circles shaped over one another going out different ways. The light catches and it's so cool. Very huge piece signed by C. Jere` 1975. I would like to get the name of this piece. I haven't seen any like this one only one I have seen close to it is almost like it, but shaped different. Got it at a yard sale $10.00. The lady said they bought it in San Jose, CA over 20 years ago.
If you know anything about it or would like to see picture please email me at christy_angel14@hotmail.com

it is a 1969 piece... called DISC BALL...made by the C Jere' consortium of artisans and apprentices in Calif... (Artisan House)... Curtis Jere' is the Master Craftsman who oversees the work, and makes sure that his visions have been carried out...it is handmade, and someone is selling this piece on ebay (signed) (under Art..metals, sculptures) ...with a buy it now of $800.00. I bought mine in 1969 in NYC... horizontally it looks like an airplane (even though it is an abstract, metal sculpture) and vertically it, well, it looks like a 3-D cross....

I bought a Jere piece in Hawaii in 1973 for about $125. It was a castle complete with a drawbridge and flags. I left it with my ex-husband when we divorced in 1984. Today, at a local thrift shop, I found the identical castle for $19.95. My daughter is calling her dad to see if he left it in this area when he moved some 20 years ago! It would be incredible if it's the same castle I had purchased back in '73...

I have a C. Jere sculptor (looks like bronze) of a boy flying a kite. This sculptor is on a square wooden base and has the C. Jere signature with the copyright mark. It is dated 1968. It is a lovely sculptor.

The company I worked for had purchased it quite a few years ago as a decoration for their corporate offices. When the company was sold and moved, the CEO gave the sculptor to me as a thank you for helping them in many ways.

I have no idea what the value of the sculptor is. Nor do I care, as I quite like it and would not dream of parting with it.

I do not know a lot about him and I am also looking for more about him. I do know his work is getting very popular. The wall sculptures of the early to late 70's are selling from $100 to over $1000.00 depending on the piece. I own a couple of his works and was able to get them at a reasonable price.

Hi... Curtis Jere is no longer alive.. however, there is a consortium(sp?) at Secret Cove that owns that trademark (c jere)... they are artisans who design and 'build' the art, under the direction of a master artist... I believe that Jere's pieces from the l960s (some of them) were hand built by him, and these do not have a signature...an original Curtis Jere piece from the l960s, designed and made by him alone, will sell for over $1000.00 today... (you might want to read earlier postings on this site)..

I am looking for information on a metal sculpture by C Jere'. It is a three story building with three chairs under an umbrella on the first floor below an awning with a sign on the side of a paint palite with two paint brushes. It is signed on the lower front right corner of the sculpture. Anyone with any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you,

I bought a metal steamboat wall art at a garage sale because I thought it was neat and unusual. When my husband and I got ready to hang it we noticed a signature on the back of C. Jere. I know nothing of the artist but have since tried finding out more on the internet. I found a fishing boat on ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5429064746&category=553 that is very similar to the materials used and the overall style and size of our piece, except ours is a steamboat and it says "Dixie" on the front. Another difference is the signature. Our signature looks like it was carved into the metal rather than painted on. I would really like to find out more about the piece and the artist. These boats seem to be so different from his other work. If there are any C. Jere experts out there I would appreciate picking your brain. There is not too much information available on the Internet and The Secret Cove, mentioned so much throughout this string, no longer carries C. Jere pieces.

In response to message #30

Curtis Jere' is a compound non-de-plume for a design group formed and directed by Jerry Fels for their company Artisan House . The company was formed by Jerry Fels and Curtis Freiler and has since been sold and resold.
Prior to Artisan House, the partners built a costume jewelry business selling work under the names Renoir and Matisse which employed around 300 people at one point.
Jerry Fels specialized in design and sales, Mr Freiler ran production. Both men are still quite alive.
A number of different artists contributed designs that were produced under the C. Jere' name.

Hope this helps clear things up

In response to message #27

I live in Hobart, Tasmania and recently purchased this particular Curtis Jere Steamboat at an auction. It is in good condition and shows a reasonable amount of aging. I would be very interested to know what it is actually worth. It now takes pride of position on my Dining Room mantel. The funny part about my purchase was that I didn't realise that I was bidding against my wife on this item, she was at the back of the room and I was at the front. We must think alike because we both saw it and both decided we wanted it without each others knowledge.

   Hi Lorraine,

C Jere produced a variety of metal sculptures in the 70's.

I'm trying to find out more about the value of his works, because I have 9 of his sculptures that my mom bought in the 70's.

If anyone out there can help me set a current value on Jere sculptures let me know. I can send photos of each sculpture.

Here is a list of what I have with simple descriptions. Many of the items are for sale:

1.Free standing brass owl sculpture: approx 1 ft tall x 1ft wide. Stands on a square, black wood base. (1969)

2. Brass tree with green enamel painted on to depict leaves. Mounted on wood to hang on the wall. (60's?)

3. Metal sailboat. Approx 2ft wide x 1.5 ft tall. Like an old square rigger sailboat. (1970)

4.Butterfles: orange enamel on the top surface. They are each on a wire that is like a stem, and they are about 2 inches wide. They are arranged like a bouquet, and are moveable. (70's)

5. Birds in flight...black metal sculpture. Approx 3.5 feet wide x 1.5 ft tall. (no date...70's)

6. Brass Train Depot. The sign on the building says, "Azuca".
Approx. 3.5 feet wide by 1.5 ft tall. (no date...70's?)

7.Ranch sculpture with windmill. Approx 4 ft wide x 1.5 ft tall. (1971)

8. Cat with fish in it's tummy. Metal edges filled in with colored resin/plastic. Oranges with turquoise. Stands about 1ft tall. (1967)

9. Cat tail metal sculpture with lamp in the base. Stands approx 5 ft tall. Each cat tail fits into a hole on the black metal base. They are moveable. (70's)

   >Hello. I just found a metal sculpture signed by
>the artist "C. Jere'". Has anyone ever heard of
>him/her? Thanks.

First......
There is NO C Jere'...
It's the fictional name signed on the art produced by Artisan House, a company co-founded by my father Jerry Fels and uncle Kurt Freiler.
They sold the company years ago.
Kurt did the production and was extremely facile.
My father did design, sales, etc. After the company grew large enough, father began to bring in and direct other contributing artists.
Jerry Fels passed on ,on the 5th of November, 07 after a short illness. He had a long, full and actively productive life. He was a man of determination, talent and unusual integrity.
And...he made a hole on 1 golfing in his last, 90th year! Can't help but be proud of him.

I write this because;
We are in the process of liquidating his art collection, sadly.
There are some early Artisan House pieces.
There are a number of pieces that were submitted by artists to Artisan House for consideration by for incorporation into the line.
There are a number of prototypes made in house, not all of them were later actually produced...including castings in aluminum alloy and bronze...mostly finished, mounted sculptures.
There is also his personal collection of art in general...(some of which has already gone to the Bonham & Butterfield auction house) ....including paintings ( some by my parents), prints and a number of figure studies my father had done over the years.
Any guidance you might offer as to how sell these pieces, in the best possible way ,would certainly be appreciated.

in sadness...peter fels

Artisan House®, designers and crafters of unique, fine-quality metal sculptures for wall, floor and tabletop, has attained an enviable position in the home and commercial decor marketplace. The firm has successfully closed the gap between pricey offerings from exclusive art galleries and mass-produced decorative pieces by creating original sculptures with unparalleled designs at affordable prices. The result infuses today's indoor and outdoor environments with dazzle and dimension.

Artisan House wall sculptures elevate the look of any room or outdoor setting thanks to a comprehensive array of designs showcasing multi-colored, cool and warm tones; nature-themed pieces with earthly inspirations; and sculptures reminiscent of activities that relax, excite or inspire. Tabletop and freestanding floor pieces also make dynamic statements in the home or out-of-doors.

For more than four decades, Artisan House's vibrant, versatile designs have been recognized as multi-dimensional "metalworks of art." In 1964, partners Jerry Fels and Kurt Freiler branched out into the specialized world of metal art. Previously, Fels operated Renoir of California -- a jewelry house that designed and produced collections of copper jewelry. It is a combination of Fels and Freiler's names that make up the signature C. Jere that marks every Artisan House sculpture.

Over the decades, Artisan House's products have evolved from smaller representational sculptures like trees, branches and small scenes to larger-scale artwork that is contemporary, trendy or traditional in style.

I have the Azusa Train station also. Received in 1974 as a gift from a friend. Not sure what it is worth. It still has the Artisan House tag saying "This is an original Curtis Jere design" Back of tag says "Curtis Jere. A California multi-media sculptor, works in bronze, copper, brass and steel. This handcrafted sculpture has a patina finish designed to become lovelier with age."

Leonard

I was going through some things in a corner of my basement the other day, and came across an old signed C Jere metal wall sculpture that I purchased at a yard sale, around 98' or so.
I almost hung it back above the storage pile when I remembered that this particular sculpture depicts a New York City scape with the World Trade Center Towers intact! It even still has the Artisan House Inc, Certificate of Authenticity tag on the back. I tried to look around to see if anybody else has one, and cant seem to find a single one anywhere. So I wonder if this piece, named 'Metropolis II', style #210178, in silver and black finish, has gained in value.
Obviously, the sentimental value is huge, but I know very little else about its worth. Not to say I am considering to sell it, since its just too cool, a piece of American History now. I mostly think it would be fun to hear if anybody has any thoughts about this one. I brought it up out of the basement and took a picture, although I seem to be getting a system error message, " script error" when I try and upload it.(any hints)? I'd like for everyone to see the pict though.

All my thanks..
