This forum looked like a pretty nice place to discuss art and artists, but it seems to be pretty dead. Anyone up for discussions, critiques, etc?

Hi, it is strange - we have a lot of traffic on the forums, but not much postings...

will you have any suggestions? we need moderators that will be able to maintain the topics. It is easy for us to provide exposure for the right (commited) moderators throughout our TrueFresco Art network (we have over 250,000 page view per month)...

Hi, I once belonged to an art forum...but it "bit the dust".
One of the things I am very interested in is the way in which artists garner recognition. Seems to vary from country to country. If you are from Canada do you know what CARFAC is? And do you read art magazines? I am astouned at one in our area it is so full of NEW "artspeak". Who is your favourite artists? Do you have a site?
THERE that should be enough to keep you busy.

I guess I'm not the typical "artsy fartsy" artist. I just enjoy doing my art. So all the terms I do not know. Michelangelo is probably my favourite artist. My link is http://glen9.truefresco.org/welcome.html

I was lucky enough to study art and architecture at Oxford, and travel throughout Europe. The Cistine (spelling?) chapel is absolutely incredibld. It's really a shame that some people decided to have cloths painted over certain body parts....Michelangelo originally painted full nudes. That's my inspiration.

Howdy: I looked at your web site. It's well put together. Liked that "blue eye"!!!!Wooooo!!!
Your photos especially of the guy in the white coat, black edge and the fellow fixing his tie are wonderfullly appealing. Have you used them in ads? Looked at the large size ads too. Great. I worked in an advertising dept for ten years and almost lost all my traditional drawing abilities...got 'em back though. Have been a court artist for the last 20 or so years....and you need your realism skills for that. Lots of cut backs here so haven';t covered a case this year so far.
Since you are on True Fresco...does that mean you have tried painting in that medium? I ordered lime putty from them but they won't ship to Canada any more because of the custom duties. Which is a pain in the ass. So finally I found some quicklime today and will test it tomorrow to see if it really is the correct stuff. If so I will have to make my own lime putty. It won't be aged but it will be okay to practice on.
I loved Florence, you are so lucky to have travelled as you have. Since you took architecture...what did you think of the first TWIN TOWER ideas? I didn't like them!!! But then I haven't studied as you have.

The photos on my website are actually my headshots (I'm also an actor).

I've never tried fresco. But it does look fun. What are the steps? I have painted on wall plaster, and mixed it with paints. That was fun.

The twin towers were cool, but yes, rather boring. Very striking for the NYC skyline, but could have been more interesting. I remember as a kid dreaming up the idea of rotating each floor about 3 degrees, so it sort of spiraled to the top.

Thanks for your compliments! Explain the process of fresco painting to me a bit more. I do remember visiting the Rome cathedral as well, with the fresco paintings on the ceiling. Isn't it pretty much plaster? And painted with water colours?

Hi....I don't usually "play" on the computer so early in the day. BUT today I am absolutely frustrated!!!!(Insert whatever swear words you like!@#@!!)
FIRST: I thought the men looked similiar...but didn't want to say inncase I was wrong. You did a good job. Did you take the photos? or does "headshots" mean that someone else took the photos of you for business purposes sisnce you are listed as an actor? This is a field I know nothing about. Did props for a play in grade nine, we won. In 1998 I had the fun of being the court artist in the Marlee Matlin/ Michael Dudikoff film directed by Sidney Furie titled In Her Defence(not a great film but great for Saint John, NB). Also my actual courtroom sketches played a large part of the History Channel Turning Point documentary, Body of Evidence, by Kevin Mathews for Connection Productions in Moncton about the Burton NB Legere trial. The complete set of over 200 drawings from the trial is at the UNB Law Library, Fredericton.....that's a s close to the acting profession as I get!!!!
SECOND: painting on plaster is not fresco.
I spent yesterday searching once again for "quicklime" or "hotlime" as the old guys called it. Thought I found some, tested it this morning. NO HEAT!!! If it doesn't get hot it's not the right stuff as far as I can figure it out. Hell, plaster gets hotter than that. I am soooo dissapointed. Actually I think painting on plaster may have a similiar feel but their is no "reaction" which makes it a fresco.
Well...I'm not sure I feel better but it helps to pound the keyboard. Gonna try and find the guy on this site who mixed his own lime putty and ask him.

Howdy "Billings", not sure what happened to Glen9...but he dissappeared. we didn't get into genuine "critique"...I always hate to make people feel bad.
However.....it's time I stopped worrying about that and call a spade a spade....as they say.

Please tell me you DO NOT draw from photographs. So few people can do right. Most times you can tell right away especially when people have no real practice at drawing a body.
I work with clay mostly. Just finished a sculpture that I would like to turn into a bronze.
Still working at the fresco. A lot fewer cracks...so I hope I am on the right track.

Yes I do often paint from a photo...some that I take myself. I use it as a reference, and often change the color or "lighting". I have done drawings from live models, if you can get one to stand for hours LOL....

I found your work ( oneimage) on the women's site and the drawing on your personal site...which I couldn't get into. An artist really does have to work for one's self....right? It seeems though that the ones who do it for money...manage to make some. I haven't found any pot of gold.
I found it interesting that you lived in Italy for awhile. You speak Italian? It is a wonderful thing to know more than one language. I happened by a small miracle to have been in Florence for two weeks the first of last December. It was wonderful, wonderful...would love to go again someday.
Did you go to Florence?

   GREETINGS !
THOUGHT I'D SAY THAT RUNNING AROUND IN HERE PAID OFF IN A GREAT HIDDEN INTEREST OF MINE.
THANKS FOR THAT QUESTION, THE POINTING TO, AND TOM BATTERSBY'S SITE FOR THE OLD BOOK TO READ THROUGH !

I CAN'T UNDERSTAND WHY A BOYS ARM WAS USED, AND IN THAT PARTICULAR GESTURE, FOR THE 'VENUS' HE RESTORED, HOWEVER. EVEN IN THE FAR AWAY PHOTO, IT LOOKS LIKE A YOUNG MALE KARATE STRIKE, BEING MUCH 'STIFFER' IN FEEL THAN THE REST OF THE SCULPTED BODY OF THE FEMALE, INCLUDING THE OTHER HAND. IN OTHER WORDS, IT LOOKS 'NAKED' WHILE THE REST OF VENUS LOOKS GRACEFULLY NUDE. SOOOOO MANY WOMEN WOULD HAVE GLADLY POSED FOR THE ARM AND HAND, AND INSTINCTUALLY, AFTER HAVING PAUSED A WHILE WITH THE SCULPTURE ITSELF, WOULD HAVE GIVEN PERFECTION. THERE! I SAID IT.
THE REST OF HIS WORK WAS INSPIRING, AND WELL CRAFTED.
IT'S POSSIBLE THAT WHEN HE LOOKED AT 'VENUS' UP CLOSE AND SAW ALL THE GRAFFITTTTTI HIS REACTION WAS DISGUSTED, AS MINE WOULD BE, AND THIS COULD HAVE REMAINED WITH HIM, IN THE WAY; BITTERNESS AND DISAPPOINTMENT DO THAT TO ART .

WHICH LEADS THE THOUGHTS TO 'MAKING MONEY AT ART' DESPERATIONS UNTIL ... 'IT'S A GOOD FULFILLING HOBBY' AND THEN.. 'A FOND MEMORY'.
FOLLOWING THAT THERE IS A GRAND POSTURING OF HAVING ACCEPTED PRACTICALITY, MATURITY OF SOUND DECISION-MAKING, AND CLOTHES FOR THE KIDS. WHICH LEADS DIRECTLY TO RUSH LIMBAUGH FOR BREAKFAST WHICH ALLOWS FOR ACCEPTANCE OF ANYTHING LIKE TORTURE AND GREED BECAUSE EVERYONE ELSE DOES.
AND, OF COURSE, EVERYONE IS TOO INFORMED TO VOTE. OR, FINALLY, ARE EVEN TOO HELPLESS TO THINK.

WELL, THIS SHOULD BE ENOUGH TO WAKE THE DEAD..

MAYBE NOT.

HAPPY TRAILS =====

Just found this by accident while looking for something else.

VENUS...with new arms...does anyone have a photo or another site where I can see the image. Seems to me I remember it was proven the Venus di Milo was holding a spindle for weaving....anyone read that?
