"hidden murals"

My house originally had frescos throughout. They have been painted over. Does anyone know the technique to remove the old paint and recover them?

Thank you for your advice. We'll see what happens. Here are pictures of the one room where the frescos haven't been painted over. Also a picture of the entrance way where most if not all of the room was Frescoed.

Hi Joshua,

I was wondering if you have done some experimenting, since we talked on the phone. And if yes, can you post some close-ups of the areas?

Sorry for the slight delay in responding. (3 years)I've been working on the exterior of the house and I really dropped the ball on the frescos.
I used water and a cotton rag and gingerly scrubbed, scrubbed. Got Nothing! I saw what might have been shadows but I couldn't be sure so I stopped in case I had gone thru them.

Oh well.
