"The first steps..."

I am a new graphic art student and was wondering what steps I might take to better prepare myself for seeking a graphic arts position once my skills are up to par?

Any ideas are appreciated.

Thanks.

There are few things, assuming you are looking to work with computer graphics:

find a magazine or advert. agency or something of interest to you in the similar field. make sure you like what they do and that you will be able to tolarate the mandane repetitious asignments there - you will have plenty. for example if you are into fashion do not contact technology publications.

when you have the list of "potential victims" contact their design departments for an intern position. they should be interested to hire you if you present yorself correctly - speak of their company and the work they do and tell that you will be trilled if they let you learn from them, etc., etc.

once in - learn the business and network.

goodluck

Thanks for the reply...sorry it took so long for me to reply back. I actually just found out that somebody took the time to answer my question.

Well, I did do what you suggested. I'm now working for a Music Industry trade managing there Digital Initiatives program. How I landed this gig I don't know. I basically bull shitted my way in, and spent weeks without sleep learning everything that was required. Like you said there is a ton of mundane tasks, but my skills have advanced way beyond what I could have ever imagine. Well, thats my update and response. Thanks for taking the time...

-Mike
