"Marble Powder"

Does anyone have a U.S. source for white marble powder for marmorino?
I have slaked my lime, but I need 200 lbs of marble dust to make marmorino for the final plaster coat.

It wasn't that simple to find marble dust, at least not here on the east coast. Googling it found everything but, and the masonry yards, here, never heard of it. I finally got a reply from a quarry, Georgia Marble, who had me contact their subsiduary, Imerys at 888-277-9636. They in turn gave me the names and telephone numbers of some of their distributors in the northeast, and finally one is sending me 3 samples of different graininess. They call it Calcium Carbonate, but assured me that it's much harder than limestone. And the cost is around 50 cents per lb. versus over $7 per lb. for imported marble dust. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. If I didn't google "marble sand", I might never have found Georgia Marble.

Hello,
I'm new to the forum and am in the process of making a Marmarino plaster mix. I live here in the Mid West and can find nothing close to a marble dust in bulk. Just curious if you have had success with this vender mentioned in your message? Did this Calcium Carbonate work out for you? Or have you since found a better source?
Thank you I hope to hear back, I realize this discussion is over a year old.
Sincerely
Jeanette

   Hi Jeanette,
Actually, I got lucky. The place that was supplying me with the high calcite lime, also has marble dust.
Their name is Mineral Specialties, and are located in North Adams, MA.
They've been giving it to me without charge, cause I require a few buckets, while their normal shipment is by the train-load.
You might google "lime" or "limestone" and see if there is someone in your area. But make sure it's high-calcite and not dolomite lime. Dolomite contains too much magnesium, which affects the pigments when you paint.
Harvey
