NEW! Introduction to Fresco 4-day Private Workshop at
the Fresco School!
The Art of Pompeian Fresco ™
The art of true
Pompeian fresco painting will be offered in this unique course.
In this workshop participants will paint historic images from the
First and Third styles of Pompeian frescoes. We will use
traditional colors as well as learn testing methods for
contemporary pigments recently available to the fresco painter.
Class members will learn to mix their colors for an entire
project. Techniques used to transfer images that allow for several
days of work will also be offered.
Students will mix the slaked lime
plaster need for each day’s painting and apply it to the panels
that have been prepared for them. Each participant will paint a
panel in the First or Third Style. On the first day participants
will learn and experience hands-on techniques, methods and
"secrets" of professional fresco plaster application
from the true Olde School English Craftsmen (Ian Hardwick - brings
25 years of experience in plastering trade to this class).
Students will learn the technique of attaching today’s work
(giornata) to the previous day’s painting; the distinctive
plastering method that allows for larger compositions.
The second day will be devoted to the scrupulous details
of preparation necessary for
a successful fresco, learn aspects of designing
frescoes based on giornatas (painting days), making of a cartoon,
transfer techniques, brushes and foundations of color. Glenn Fischer will guide
the class through the nuances of pigment preparation and storing.
The third day will
be dedicated to reviewing of the skills acquired in the first
two days of the workshop. Together
with ILia Anossov students will
explore history of Pompeian Frescoes and study
specifics of Pompeian fresco and plaster.
Days 4 and 5 will be dedicated to painting during which each
student will complete a minimum of two frescoes from their own
designs refined during the class
and will be painting in the true fresco technique,
applying paint on the damp plaster....
Be prepared for a fast paced
and intensive class - ILia Anossov,
Ian Hardwick and Glenn Fischer will take you on a 3 day
journey into a professional fresco studio!
Painting in the true fresco
technique is a special experience, for centuries fresco was
greeted as "The Mother of all Arts". The pigment particles are
held in position by the lime as it carbonizes. The fusion of the
painting with the architectural wall surface is the distinctive
quality of true fresco. The luminosity of the surface lends a
unique glowing effect to the colors
used in the painting. We are in touch with the tactile, artistic
and spiritual experiences of
two thousand years ago, the fresco artists of Pompeii.
Roman wall painting has been well
preserved in Pompeii since the eruption of Mt Vesuvius in 79 AD.
The Great Age of Pompeian Fresco will be presented along with the
art of painting in the true fresco tradition. Fresco has been the
favorite medium to monumentalize and commemorate
the spiritual and cultural messages of the past.
Technique
acquired during the
workshop will also enable students to paint frescoes of different
periods and styles.
