I recently came across an artist on line who sells fresco paintings done on canvas. When I inquired about how this was done, I was told that they use a fresco casein on canvas. Has anyone ever heard of this?? or know what this casein is?? I'm very interested in what this might be, I have never heard of this before.

Thankyou

casein is a powder with a cheeselike color, made from cheese or from the cream of milk. It has no taste, does not smell and can be used with water, alcohol and mixed with lime. if mixed with lime it can be used as glue on canvas or on fresco.

Perhaps the artist you came across uses a casein/lime mixture, adds pigments and maybe some sand and paints this on canvas to make it look like a fresco (but of course it is not a real fresco!

yep, just another gimmik

in fact i am not sure that even mixing casein with lime will do any good - casein is organic and lime will simply burn it...

perhaps they mix casein with sand and chalk to create somewhat a plaster look...
