My daughter has a new digital camera and is very interested in the visual arts. She is searching for info on "a certain type of visual art (picture or painting) that is comprised of many very small pictures. At a distance you see one large picture of concept, but upon closer scrutiny one may see hundreds of small graphics. What is this called?? Who are the leading artists??

the images that your daughter is interested in are called "photomosaics". i don't know of any "artist" who is popular using this technique but any major book store should have something. as an arist, i encourage you to push your daughter in a direction that has a more meaningful conceptual basis and is less reliant on fad and technique. such encouragement should serve her well in the contemporary art world.

good luck,

It is a good suggestion! However, the technique would only enhance the concept. Also Picasso once said that in order to reject something the one should master it first!

I believe the artist most closely working in the style described would be Chuck Close.

I hope that helps.

Does he have a website? If "yes" can you post the link?
