"authenticating fresco"
 
   A "fresco" was just discovered in a church in my home town. I say "fresco" because it hasn't been determined that it is exactly that. However, it is a wall painting from appx 1860. The wall is not hollow and the paint surface is highly absorbant. The "intonaco" is a little suspect (at least for buon fresco as I know it), but perhaps that's an issue of damage or style. Overall, the painting is in varying degrees of disrepair. The painting is quite large, behind the entire choir loft--and might even continue around the walls of the entire church. It was discovered during some recent repair work. There seem to be indications that the painting is a fresco, while at the same time there are indications that it isn't! I'm curious to see if anyone has any ideas here. Sorry there are so few clues. I was asked to look at the fresco and have just seen it for the first time today. Thanks for the feedback.

The first step should be is to take a real closeup of the surface and post it here. Better more than one, damaged and survived areas. Then we will have a referense that I can use to give you additional clues as of what to look for.
